UX Design & Research
How do we build a reading ecosystem that balances both business goals and user needs? Our user group: Working parents, head of household Opportunity: The declining interest in reading among young children aged 6-18, is somewhat still receiving less attention. Bookbibuli aims to tackle the ‘reading crisis’ by bringing young readers together within a structured reading ecosystem. As there wasn’t any research conducted in the past, Bookbibuli desired to better understand the needs and expectations of parents about the new feature which offers comprehensive learning guides, and wanted to understand the why behind their needs or requests, and how parents, in particular, are thinking about this new feature. The aim is to uncover the goals. motivations, potential barriers and impact of this feature on young readers from the perspective of parents. Impact: Improved recruitment efficiency by 20% by leading UX research operations and managing 8 participant interviews through implementation of standardized templates and processes. Delivered user-centered design solutions that drove 25% higher satisfaction and creating high-fidelity prototypes that reduced development time by 20%.
Client:

Role:
UX Research
Year:
(8 weeks) 2024
Methods and skills: Digital surveys and interviews, discussion guide, stakeholder interview, affinity mapping, persona creation, research plan.
Tools: Figma, Google Forms, Miro, Zoom.
For this research, we decided, with client’s input, to conduct digital surveys and interviews. The reason behind choosing to conduct surveys was to elicit faster responses and to target a vast population from the key demographics.
KICK-OFF MEETINGS
My first aim was to understand what Bookbibuli was looking to accomplish from the user research. For this, I had several rounds of meetings to better understand their objectives, their reasons behind this research and what they were looking to get out of this research. We also discussed the types of target audience for this research, which were the parents. A discussion guide was created with all the notes from these kick off meetings. The questions were based on Bookbibuli’s objectives and goals cited during the kick off meetings.
SURVEY
I did survey with 35 potential users to know their goals, motivations to enroll their children into a guided reading ecosystem. The questions were open ended, giving me the opportunity to dig into the reasons for needing this new guided reading feature, the value it would bring and any potential barriers. Parents were the sole focus, as that was Bookbibuli’s primary audience when discussing this new feature.
INTERVIEWS
From the survey participants, 8 people gave their consent to be interviewed. I concluded on 8 remote interviews, each 45 minutes long over Zoom.
Keller, a 35-year-old single parent who works as an accountant in Delhi, India.
About:
Keller is a hardworking single parent who likes to read with his child, Carlos, every night before bed. However, he finds it difficult to maintain a consistent reading routine due to his busy life.
Keller's goal is to build a great collection of books for Carlos, but he struggles to find the next suitable read that his child would enjoy.
Goals:
Make a consistent reading routine for his child without any hassle.
Don't have to manually find suitable reading titles.
Track his child's reading schedule.
Get fun, engaging, and clear guidance on what his child should read.
Be a contributing and responsible parent.
Frustrations:
Hassle of manually searching for age-appropriate books every time.
Often disappointed when he skips the reading schedule with his child.
Spiraling into overthinking for not contributing to his child's routine.
With all the information gathered from the surveys and interviews, I was able to present a very thorough summary of the research to the Bookbibuli stakeholders, including discussion guide, research notes & a detailed summary.
REFLECTIONS
Doing research and synthesis in 3 week timeline was exciting.
The stakeholders were enthusiastic about the research procedure and wanted to participate actively in discussions.
